Registration Opens for Summer Camp Theatre Workshops at The Midland

Registrations are now being accepted for Camp Encore as The Midland Theatre invites students entering grades 1-8 to step on stage and explore the performing arts! With a focus on nurturing interest in the arts, The Midland is offering interactive and educational theatre workshops to complement their weeklong residency with Missoula Children’s’ Theatre.

Camp Encore, a series of theatrically-based workshops for children entering grades 1-8, will be held Tuesday through Thursday, July 21-23 at The Midland Theatre. These fun and inspiring workshops are divided into age-appropriate, interactive explorations of the performing arts. The young actors will be engaged in hands-on activities, coached by Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) professional actors and The Midland’s expert staff, Angel Gonser and Jeff Barcus.

Workshops include: Drama Quest; Step Onstage; Acting and Reacting; Let’s Make-up; What If; Imaginative Props; Improvisation; Acting Up; and If These Walls Could Talk. The cost is $5 per workshop, with scholarships available to assist with workshop fees. Capacity is limited to 30 participants per workshop, and the length of each will be 45 minutes, with start times at either 9:00 am or 10:00 am. Camp Encore Workshops are scheduled for morning sessions only with workshops for grades 1 to 2 on Tuesday July 21st; workshops for grades 3 to 5 on Wednesday, July 22; and workshops for grades 6 to 8 on Thursday, July 23rd. Camp Encore complements the Missoula Children’s Theatre weeklong residency at The Midland as they also audition, rehearse and put on two performances of The Pied Piper. Students grades 1 to 8 are encouraged to participate in both camp encore workshops and audition for The Pied Piper. Camp Encore is held in the mornings and The Pied Piper rehearsals are held in the afternoons and are intended for children who are both cast and not cast in the performance of The Pied Piper.

Camp Encore Workshops include the following sessions:

MCT --- DRAMA QUEST!
Use role-playing to help develop your acting skills. This workshop will help boost your self-esteem and increase communication skills. You’ll have so much fun you won’t
realize that you’re learning! Grades: 1 – 2

MIDLAND --- STEP ONSTAGE
Grace the stage where many legends have performed! Learn stage directions, be a director and act in short scenes with your peers on The Midland stage. Grades: 1 – 2

MIDLAND --- ACTING AND REACTING
Gain acting skills through cool activities filled with music, movement, and laughter! This workshop will help mold young actors into good listeners. Grades: 1 – 2

MCT --- LET’S MAKE-UP
Without the support of visual image, the most talented of actors can portray only a narrow spectrum of characters. Make-up is the foundation and the most basic visual image for all performers. This participatory workshop teaches students of all ages by demonstrating corrective, old age and fantasy make-up. Grades: 1 – 8 (3 different, age-appropriate workshops)

MCT --- WHAT IF
Enhance your imagination by using the magic question “What If?” These two words will take you to places you’ve never been before by using your own creativity. Grades: 3 – 5

MIDLAND --- IMAGINATIVE PROPS
Create a character based from the hand prop given to you! This workshop explains the importance of hand props while creating characters. Grades: 3 – 5

MIDLAND --- IMPROVISATION
Be prepared to act off the top of your head. This workshop helps young actors develop their thinking and doing skills in an environment where anything can happen! Grades: 3 – 8 (2 different, age-appropriate workshops)

MCT --- ACTING UP
Dive into the basics of the acting craft! Develop a working strategy for approaching a role through various exercises that will help ease inhibitions. Grades: 6 – 8

MIDLAND --- IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK
Discover the historic roots of The Midland Theatre. This workshop takes you on an adventurous tour behind the scenes of the Midland Theatre! Be sure to dress comfortably. Grades: 6 – 8

Here’s what past years’ participants shared about their experiences: The “class size was small enough for everyone to have participation time” With the Improvisation workshop, our daughter “was allowed to express her individuality and humor; She said it was fun, fun, fun!” From another parent, our child “really liked dancing with the other children and especially enjoyed making up a dance in the workshop.” Another mom, noted “She really had a great time and would love to do it again!” and she loved “being creative and using her body” to tell a story.

Each of these theatrically-based enrichment workshops are an age-appropriate, educational and interactive exploration of the performing arts through hands-on activities, coached by Missoula Children’s Theatre’s professional actors and The Midland’s expert staff.
