Cray's story starts in the Pacific Northwest, where he built a following in small towns long before he had a record deal, and where a young guitarist named Stevie Ray Vaughan became a friend and stage partner. From there it only grew: five Grammy Awards, induction into the Blues Hall of Fame, the Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award, and a catalog of 19 studio albums that never once sounds like anyone but him.
Along the way, Cray has shared a stage or studio with John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Chuck Berry, Albert Collins, Tina Turner, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, and The Rolling Stones. He designed two signature Fender guitars. He even appeared in Animal House before his own debut album had a release date.
2026 marks the 40th anniversary of Strong Persuader, the breakthrough album that made Cray the first blues and soul artist to find a home in the MTV era, topped charts worldwide, and won him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording. Nearly forty years later, that same stinging guitar and soulful voice are still touring the country, night after night, city after city.
